Understanding Chinese Medicine

The Chinese philosophy of health and medicine is founded on the belief that energy flows through various Meridians of Channels of the body. When this energy is moving smoothly, you feel healthy, calm and relaxed. However, when the energy becomes congested or depleted (from everyday stress or environmental factors), you experience exhaustion, irritability, and eventually disease.

Acupuncture restores and regulates the flow of energy throughout the body by stimulating specific points along the Channels. Very fine needles are inserted into the points. The needles are so fine that the process is quite painless. Acupuncture induces physical relaxation, improved circulation, increased energy, relief from pain, and gradually, the eradication of even serious diseases. Acupuncture should not be taken on an empty stomach, as it may cause fainting.

Chinese Herbal Medicine evolved into a complex system of formulations that is without equal anywhere in the world. An herbal formula usually consists of four components; the empire herb, the minister herbs, the assistant herbs, and the message herbs. Herbs are combined in such a way that a synergistic and complementary effect is achieved that far outperforms the effect of single herbs. The formula is made of natural plants and minerals and is prepared in different forms – pills, powders and raw herbs.

Herbal medicines are the perfect complement to acupuncture. After making a diagnosis based on traditional Chinese medical practice, the acupuncturist/herbalist will formulate an herbal mixture tailored to your specific condition. This mixture is to be prepared at home as a tea, and drunk either throughout the day or as a single daily dose. Specially formulated teas are more effective than prepackaged pills or medications because they address the imbalances in your system as a whole, in addition to providing relief from your specific symptom(s) or medical complaint(s).

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number and frequency of treatments varies, depending on the individual’s condition. Some acute cases require only two or three treatments, while chronic cases may require one treatment a week for a period of a few months. For the purposes of health maintenance and disease prevention, the acupuncturist recommends an acupuncture treatment and an herbal preparation once a month.
